Brainspotting is therapy modality where in we use awareness of body sensations while finding a
visual spot to look at that either increases or decreases the emotion we are working on
processing. In a typical brainspotting session the client chooses an emotionally activating
memory/topic that they want to more fully process through. Next the therapist coaches client to
mindfully enter into some level of awareness of the corresponding body sensation while a point
in the visual field is found to process from.
The developer of brainspotting was previously trained in EMDR and through his work with a
high preforming athelete he discovered that processing can happen not only when moving the
eyes side to side (as is done in EMDR processing) people can also process when they find a
certain spot in their visual field.
